Know Your Starting Point
What Is an InBody Scan?
InBody uses bioelectrical impedance analysis, or BIA, to estimate body composition. Small electrical currents travel through contact points at your hands and feet. The device measures resistance to those currents and uses that information to calculate estimates of body water, fat-free mass, and body fat.
Your results add detail to a standard weigh-in. Repeat scans performed under similar conditions can help you and your provider follow patterns in muscle and fat over time.
What Your Results Can Show
- Body Fat Percentage
- The estimated proportion of your total weight that comes from fat.
- Body Fat Mass
- The estimated amount of fat in your body, expressed as a weight.
- Skeletal Muscle Mass
- An estimate of the muscle involved in movement, helping put weight changes in context.
- Fat-Free Mass
- Your estimated body weight excluding fat. This includes water, muscle, bone, and other lean tissues.
- Total Body Water
- An estimate of the water in your body, an important part of understanding body composition.
- Weight & BMI
- A weight measurement and body mass index calculation to consider alongside your body composition results.
Available measurements and report details depend on the InBody model and settings used.
Progress With Perspective
Support Your Weight & Wellness Goals
A change on the scale can reflect changes in fat, muscle, water, or a combination of these. Body composition testing gives you more information to discuss as you work toward your goals.
Whether you are starting a new routine or following an established plan, InBody can provide a useful baseline for future comparisons.
- Establish a baseline. Record your starting measurements before making changes to your nutrition or activity.
- Follow muscle and fat trends. Bring additional context to progress during a weight management or fitness program.
- Have a more informed conversation. Review changes alongside your health history, symptoms, activity, and goals.

Your Visit
What to Expect
-
Prepare for the Scan
The team will confirm basic information and guide you through positioning. You will remove your shoes and socks, use the restroom beforehand, and spend a few minutes standing upright before testing.
-
Take the Measurement
You will stand on the foot electrodes and hold the hand electrodes as directed. Remain still during the brief measurement. Testing time varies by model.
-
Understand Your Results
Your result sheet provides a breakdown of your measurements. Discuss what the numbers mean, how testing conditions may have affected them, and how to make future comparisons useful.
How to Prepare
Consistent conditions help make repeat scans more useful. Follow the clinic's instructions, including these general InBody recommendations:
- Allow at least three hours after your last meal before testing.
- Keep your usual fluid intake the day before and arrive normally hydrated.
- Test before exercise and after you have fully recovered from recent workouts. Ask the team about timing for your routine.
- Use the restroom before your scan and remove heavy accessories.
- Wear light clothing. Your hands and feet should be bare and free of lotion.
- For follow-up scans, aim for the same time of day and similar preparation.
If meal timing or fluid intake needs to be adjusted for a medical reason, follow your healthcare provider's guidance. Read InBody's preparation recommendations.
Helpful Answers
InBody Scan FAQs
How long does an InBody scan take?
The measurement itself is brief, often less than two minutes depending on the model and testing mode. Allow additional time for check-in, preparation, and discussing your results. Contact Timeless Rx for appointment timing.
Why can my readings change between visits?
Hydration, recent meals, exercise, body temperature, and testing position can affect BIA readings. Look for trends across scans performed under similar conditions, and discuss unexpected changes with your provider.
How often should I have a scan?
The best interval depends on your goals and care plan. Ask your provider when a follow-up measurement would be useful. Comparable preparation and consistent testing conditions matter when reviewing progress.
Does an InBody scan diagnose a health condition?
InBody provides body composition estimates that can support a broader health assessment. Results should be considered alongside your medical history and any other evaluation your provider recommends. A scan alone does not establish a diagnosis.
