Does Drinking Water Really Help Your Skin?
Does Drinking Water Really Help the Skin?
We all know that drinking water is important for overall health. But it has been debated whether drinking water is of any importance specifically to the skin’s health & appearance. I am absolutely certain that answer is YES. As a trusted professional, I have researched and educated myself on the importance of water and its effects on the skins overall heath & appearance.
Some may debate my answer because there is a lack of studies that show the exact effects of water and its affect on our skin. The reason is that water can’t be patented, so it is difficult to fund this type of research when there is nothing to sell to replenish the cost. But I don’t need a study to tell me that staying hydrated is important for my skin. It is already known that if your skin is dry, tight, flaky or dull, you are not getting a sufficient amount of water and you are lacking hydration.
First, lets discuss the most obvious reason to drink more water. Did you know that the skin is the largest organ in your body? Because your skin is an organ, it is made up of cells. Skin cells, like any other cells, are made up of water. If these organs and cells lack water, they can not and will not function properly.
During the coarse of a day, we sweat and exert energy that depletes our ability to stay hydrated. When we hydrate by drinking water, the water will reach the other organs first. This means the skin is the last to be hydrated. So, how do we know how much water to drink to adequately hydrate our bodies? Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day is suggested. But if it’s during the summer months or you are exercising, you may want to increase your water intake.
Other than drinking water, what else can we do to hydrate our skin? TOPICALLY! You can hydrate internally, but don’t forget that topical hydration is super important for our skin. Use a moisturizer daily….even oily skin needs moisture. Moisturizers are made to cater to the skin type, so no excuses! Moisturize! The best time to apply moisturizer is immediately following your bath or shower. The skin is still porous and can absorb the product. Also, you prolong the life of your moisturizer by applying it to damp skin, as the spreadability is greater and you use less product. You can increase your topical hydration by applying a product containing hyaluronic acid before your moisturizer. Hyaluronic acid holds 1,000 times its own weight in water. This means that it attracts the water to the skin and holds it there! At Timeless Rx, we love the Ommerse Renewal Creme! This product contains hyaluronic acid, encapsulated retinol, & powerful antioxidants to replenish, rejuvenate & repair the skins moisture barrier.
Hydration is important! Drink water & stay topically hydrated! I am here to help. If you have questions regarding your skins hydration, elasticity, density, or overall skin health, come see me at Timeless Rx! I would love to give you that plump, radiant appearance that comes from hydrated skin!
